One year into the second Trump Administration, the United States is pursuing a markedly different approach to international security and alliance management. “Might makes right” is not just the subtext, it’s the headline.
The recent United States National Defense Strategy (NDS) dismisses the “international rules-based order” as a “cloud-castle abstraction,” signalling a significant shift away from previously accepted frameworks.
To date, there has been relatively limited responses from Canberra or public discussion in Australia about the implications of these shifts for our national defence policy and long-term strategic planning.
