Malcolm Turnbull urges homeowners who have installed foil insulation to call hotline and seek an immediate safety inspection

Published on: February 22, 2010

Malcolm Turnbull is urging all homeowners who installed foil insulation through the Rudd Government’s failed home insulation program to seek an urgent safety inspection to ensure their homes are safe.

“Safety is paramount and I encourage any homeowners who have been part of this program to seek urgent information by calling the Government’s hotline on 131 792,” Malcolm said

“Homeowners should not enter the ceiling space until the licensed electrical contractor has given the all-clear.

By calling the hotline homeowners will receive information about arranging for a licensed electrical contractor to conduct a safety inspection, and where necessary, rectification work related to the installation of foil insulation under the program.

Homeowners will not be out of pocket for any inspection or rectification works. The electrical contractor will be able to seek reimbursement for the inspection, and any necessary works, from the Commonwealth.

Local electoral contractors and authorised installers should call 1800 029 686 to seek advice on outstanding claims and what the end of the program means for their small business.

David Levin says:

Shouldn’t we be dealing with the insulation clean-up based on the premise that the shonky/dodgy installer should be the one paying for the corrections? In a normal situation, if a private person had some work done in their house that was not up to scratch then they would go back to the installer and get them to put it right. Surely the same logic applies here? Is there some magical/secret rule that applies when the work is funded by the tax-payer?

What effort (if any) is being made to recover funds from the rogue installers? I’m guessing none.
