Clean Up Australia Day

On Sunday Federal Member for Wentworth Malcolm Turnbull MP helped to clean up Bondi Beach as part of the annual Clean Up Australia Day.

Malcolm joined Vaucluse MP Peter Debnam and Waverley Councillor Joy Clayton and more than 60 student volunteers from local schools Ascham, Reddam House and Moriah College  in the clean up.

“It was great to see so many young people out on a Sunday morning supporting such a great cause.  Wentworth is blessed with such natural beauty like Bondi Beach and it is important we all work together to keep our electorate clean,” Malcolm said.

The Bondi Beach clean up was part of a wider national campaign with 7073 sites around the country and an estimated 588, 000 volunteers for the 20th Clean Up Australia Day.

Preliminary results from organisers estimate 15, 560 tonnes of rubbish has been removed from beaches, waterways, parks and bushland across Australia. The top ten rubbish items included cigarette butts, glass alcohol bottles, aluminium alcohol cans and glass pieces.

“Clean Up Australia Day is a fantastic initiative and I would like to congratulate founder Ian Kiernan on another successful year,” Malcolm said.
